Love is a central theme in the Bible, with numerous verses and stories highlighting its importance in the life of a believer. In fact, the Bible teaches that love is the ultimate source of all good things and the foundation of our relationship with God and humanity.
One of the most well-known verses on love in the Bible is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, which states, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. We can cultivate love in our hearts by spending time in prayer, studying the Word of God, and seeking to imitate the example of Jesus in our daily lives. As we do so, we will be transformed by the power of love and become agents of God’s love in the world.
One practical way to grow in love is to practice the spiritual discipline of loving others as ourselves. Jesus commanded his followers to love one another as he has loved us (John 13:34). This means showing love and compassion to those around us, even when it is difficult or inconvenient. It means putting the needs of others above our own and seeking to build up and encourage those in our community.
In addition to loving others, we are also called to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). This means prioritizing our relationship with God above all else and seeking to deepen our love for him through prayer, worship, and obedience to his Word. As we draw near to God, he will draw near to us and fill us with his love, empowering us to love others in return.
Ultimately, love is the greatest commandment given to us by Jesus (Matthew 22:37-39). It is the mark of a true disciple of Christ and the evidence of our faith in action. As we seek to grow in love and increase our love for God and humanity, let us remember the words of 1 John 4:7-8, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
